CHAPTER 5

Guiding the team over the gently rolling northwesterly trail that ambled along the Kansas River, Amanda drank in the breathtaking wooded ridges lining either side of the serene valley. Springs and patches of timber interspersed a tranquil landscape much more vast and open than the familiar dense forests and winding, irregular hills of northeastern Pennsylvania. Already she found the spaciousness refreshing, the immense sky overhead magnificent. “Space to breathe,” Pa had called it, and now Amanda knew why. She loved being able to see so far in every direction, and swallowed a pang of sadness that he wasn’t there to enjoy it, too.

“I’m getting thirsty,” Sarah said, drawing her out of her musings.

“We’ll stop at that little grove ahead. It looks like a good place to make camp.”

The sun had already sunk beneath the horizon, its slanting rays painting the western sky vibrant rose and violet. Amanda halted the mules, then hopped down and began unhitching them.

“I’ll gather wood before it gets too dark,” Sarah offered, and bustled off out of sight.
